Women who are unhappy with the size and shape of their breasts can benefit from breast augmentation, also called breast enlargement, with implants. This Brisbane, and Mackay Queensland plastic surgeon can accentuate your bustline and give you voluminous, firm breasts. In addition to breast enhancement, Dr. Phillip Bushell-Guthrie is also adept at breast reduction surgery for patients suffering from overly large breasts, as well as mastopexy repositioning or raising of the breast.

Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation (enlargement) with implants from Dr. Bushell-Guthrie Brisbane, and Mackay Queensland plastic surgeon can reshape and recontour your breasts while adding volume and "perkiness" to the breastline. One of the most common cosmetic procedures for women, breast enlargement can create breasts that are more proportionate to a patient's body frame and offer a more youthful appearance.

The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Dr. Phillip Bushell-Guthrie will begin the breast augmentation procedure by making an incision through which he can place the implant. This is usually made in the crease under the breast; however, in some cases the incisions can be made around the areola (the dark area surrounding the nipple). A pocket will be created between the breast and the chest muscle that will provide space for the implant. Sometimes, the implant can be placed behind the chest muscle itself, although Dr. Bushell-Guthrie's preferred method is to place the implant directly behind the breast tissue. The incision is then closed with fine sutures. As with any surgical procedure, there will be some residual scarring, but Dr. Bushell-Guthrie will make the incisions as small and discreet as possible. Breast enlargement by Dr. Bushell-Guthrie Brisbane and Mackay, Queensland plastic surgeon is performed in a hospital under general anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes about one-and-a-half hours to complete.

Breast Augmentation Recovery
There is often slight pain and discomfort during the first day after breast augmentation in addition to a light numbness over the breast that may take up to two months to fade. A patch of permanent numbness or even increased sensitivity somewhere on the breast may also occur. Any bruising or swelling from the operation should be gone by about one week. Patients should allow themselves at least a week off of work to recover; normal daily routines can typically be resumed after this time. Rigorous activity should be avoided for at least four weeks. Nipple erection is generally not affected by breast enlargement, and patients should still be able to breastfeed.

Breast augmentation and enlargement can give patients in the Brisbane, and Mackay Queensland areas a whole new look for their bodies. Dr. Bushell-Guthrie is experienced and skilled with this procedure and looks forward to giving patients the youthful bustlines that they've been dreaming of.

Breast Implants
The two main types of breast implants available at our Brisbane practice are saline implants and silicone implants.

Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone implants are composed of a silicone shell, and they are filled with a silicone gel. The latest gels are said to be "cohesive" and are designed to avoid gel run-out even if the shell ruptures. Cohesive gel implants are a bit firmer than previous types of silicone implants, but they still have an a natural feel to them.

Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are made of silicone shell filled with a saltwater solution. As with most cosmetic treatments, there are advantages and disadvantages to using saline implants. Although they add volume and definition to the breasts, they do not feel as natural as their silicone counterparts. Plus, they can sometimes produce a rippled appearance. On the other hand, the body can easily absorb the saltwater should they rupture.

Breast Implant Considerations
There are some factors that affect both kinds of implants. Keep in mind that breast implants interfere with the reading of mammograms. Dr. Phillip Bushell-Guthrie advises patients who have implants to have ultrasound scans performed every year to check the breasts and implants.

At the patient's initial consultation, Dr. Bushell-Guthrie will go over breast implant options and the risks and benefits of each and will decide with the patient which implant will be best for her needs and breast enlargement goals. Breast Reduction
Women with overly large breasts can often suffer from a number of problems, including bra-strap indentation, pain and discomfort, difficulty fitting into clothing, and self-consciousness. Breast reduction surgery can make the breasts smaller by taking away excess breast tissue and skin, lifting the breasts, and reshaping them.

The Breast Reduction Procedure
Dr. Phillip Bushell-Guthrie will make incisions around the areola (the dark-pigmented area surrounding the nipple) and from there down to the crease under the breast. He will then remove excess tissue and skin and reproportion the breastline so that it is in keeping with the patient's body frame. Some patients may also require liposuction to achieve optimal breast reduction. This procedure is fairly major surgery which can take at least three hours under general anaesthesia.

Breast Reduction Recovery
A light numbness may develop over the breasts during recovery and take some time to wear off, and it could even leave permanent patches of numbness in some areas of the breasts. Patches of increased sensitivity are also known to occur in some patients. Swelling and bruising from the operation should be gone after about three weeks, and stitches will be removed after two weeks. There will inevitably be some scarring from the procedure, but, Dr. Bushell-Guthrie will make the incisions as inconspicuous as possible. Women must assume that they will no longer be able to breastfeed after a breast reduction. Normal, daily routines can typically be resumed about two weeks after the procedure.

Long scars are a byproduct of breast reduction surgery; however, reducing the size of large breasts can improve the quality of a patient's life significantly by alleviating the pain, discomfort, and (for some) embarrassment of having overly large breasts.

Breast Repositioning
This operation is similar to a breast reduction, but it removes only a very small amount of breast tissue, just enough to raise the nipples and excise skin flaps, leaving the breast’s size relatively unaffected. Through this process the breasts are lifted and reshaped so as to appear higher, firmer, and more youthful. There will be scars on the breasts after the operation and they may be noticeable, however, Dr. Phillip Bushell-Guthrie will make them as discreet as possible. The recovery process for this operation is similar to that for breast reduction.

Asymmetrical Breasts
Breast asymmetry is not only common; it's almost universal. A difference in size of up to 20 percent between breasts is considered normal; however, some women have noticeable breast asymmetry that is well beyond that range and may want to consider cosmetic surgery to correct it. Although it is impossible to make the breasts exactly equal, in size and shape, substantial improvement can be made. Dr. Phillip Bushell-Guthrie can achieve this with a variety of procedures, such as breast augmentation or breast reduction. He will discuss the best options for each individual patients needs.
